Arsene Iliadis, of Greek origin, and the church supplies company Iliadis in Ukraine

When you hear the surname Iliadis, you immediately understand that it is a person of Greek origin, even of course in Ukraine.

The Greeks of Ukraine are the Greek ethnic minority living in Ukraine, officially recognized by the Ukrainian state. The majority of them are concentrated around the city of Mariupol. According to the Ukrainian census of 2001, 91,548 Greeks live in Ukraine, which make up 0.2% of the country's population.

Greek presence in the Black Sea has existed since ancient times. The first Greek colonies on the shores of today's Ukraine were founded in the 6th century BC. The inhabitants of these colonies often traded with other peoples of the Black Sea (Scythians, Cimmerians, Goths, Mayots). After the Mongols invaded the steppes of the north, the Tatars who followed them descended further south to the Crimea. Its ancient inhabitants, the Greeks, remained only in the southern hills of Crimea. Later with their intercourse with the Tatars, some Greeks abandoned their mother tongue Greek and used Urum, a dialect of the Crimean Tatar language.

The Greeks coexisted with the Crimean Tatars until the Russian Empire occupied Crimea. Then Empress Catherine the Great decided to relocate the Greek population of Crimea to the northern shores of the Sea of Azov, in order to protect them from Ottoman raids. They settled in various villages around Donetsk and Mariupol. During the years 1828-1856, thousands of Greeks settled in the wider area. From 1810 to 1873, Mariupoli with the surrounding Greek villages was a "Greek administrative area". Until 1859, the settlement of people of other nationalities was not allowed in the area of Mariupoli.

Today, in the very troubled Ukraine, there are many residents of Greek origin who are trying to get by with the rest of the Ukrainians.

One of them is Arsen Iliadis, who is a businessman and active in church supplies immediately after the Ukrainian revolution of 2014 (Ukrainian: 2014 Українська революция‎‎, 2014 Ukrayinsʹka revolyutsiya), also known as the Revolution of Dignity, which broke out in Ukraine in February 2014, with demonstrations against corruption, authoritarianism, the criminalization of the state, and due to the refusal of the country's president, Viktor Yanukovych, to continue Ukraine's accession process to the European Union, due to his close relations with Russia.

In this difficult period for Ukraine, Mr. Iliadis managed to combine entrepreneurship with faith, the faith he needed so much in those troubled times that continue to this day.
