On March 17, 2024, in Tarpon Springs, Florida, the streets were alive with celebration as the yearly Greek Independence Day parade took over the lively “Greek village” at the heart of the town. Along Dodecanese Boulevard, which sets the scene with its nod to the beautiful Aegean archipelago, the parade honored the town’s deep heritage, heavily influenced by the arrival of settlers from the island of Kalymnos (part of the Dodecanese archipelago of the Aegean sea) known for their mastery in sponge diving. 

Families from local schools, communities, and Greek organizations converged, bedecked in the iconic blue and white hues, waving both Greek and American flags in a show of camaraderie and pride. Among the participants, Plato Academy Schools were there, with students singing the Greek National Anthem while carrying flags from both nations, accompanied by educators and parents displaying banners. Greek teachers Mr. Giorgos Benakis and Mrs. Vasiliki Andriakenas led the Plato group, the first displaying a traditional uniform from Crete, while the later a beautiful ancient Greek outfit.

This year’s parade held a poignant significance as it coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. Against the backdrop of traditional Greek motifs adorning the floats, draped in the colors of the Hellenic flag, solemn messages underscored the ongoing struggles faced by Cyprus.

Notable figures graced the parade, including Mr. Philip Christopher, President of the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus and Grand Marshal of the parade; Congressman Gus Bilirakis; Archbishop of Zelon, Sevastianos; Consul General of Greece in Tampa, Mr. Loukas Tsokos, and Tarpon Springs Mayor, Mr. Costa Vatikiotis.

Beyond the festivity, the parade served as a poignant reminder of the enduring challenges confronted by the Greek people and their steadfast commitment to preserving their cultural heritage and advocating for freedom.
