ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ Photo: Πάρις Ταβιτιάν  © Museum of Cycladic Art Marble Colossal Kore statue from Thera, 600-575 π.Χ.  The colossal marble Kore from the cemetery of the ancient city of Thera is one of the few sculptural works of the Archaic period, in the characteristic type of Kore, preserved complete. The slender female figure dressed in the full-length garment, under which the feet are barely visible. Her left arm is lowered in contact with the body, while the right arm, that is bent at the elbow, touches the chest, which is only just indicated. The Kore, made of Naxian marble, was found in a supine position, in an area of archaic burials of the 7th and the 6th centuries BC and, according to the excavator Charalambos Sigalas, it was intended to function as a sema, namely a marker over the grave of an eminent Theran woman. However, as the processing of the sculpture was not completed, possibly due to an accident at the final carving stage, the statue was buried in a supine position ...

Mask of Dionysos, 1st cent. BC

ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ Mask of Dionysos,1st cent. BC Left half of mask larger than life size depicting Dionysos. It was found on the Acropolis' south slope where the god’s sanctuary was also located. Here Dionysos is old with thick beard and rich hair adorned with a band. Another band or stephane made of some other material, possibly metal, must have fitted into the small drills on the right. The god gazes to the ground indicating that the mask was suspended in an elevated position and the narrow depression on its upper part would have facilitated its fastening to another surface. The mask would have been set up on the trunk of a tall tree or a column dressed with garments, around which ecstatic dances and other religious performances would have taken place. Although similar scenes with masks of Dionysos erected in his sanctuaries are known through vase painting iconography, the mask of the Acropolis Museum is one of the few examples that have survived to our days.

Head of a goddess statue. Probably Aphrodite

ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ Head of a goddess statue. Probably Aphrodite Head of an acrolithic statue of a goddess. It was found in 1857 in the Odeion of Herodes Atticus. The statue is probably a copy of a chryselephantine work of the 5th or 4th cent. BC and possibly depicts Aphrodite. The upper part of the head has an oblique cut and is worked in a way as to receive an additional probably wooden piece which would have been firmly secured with dowels in the grooves seen on the top. The hair is coloured with red paint which served as the foundation for its final gilding with fine gold leaves. The marble of the face has been highly polished to resemble ivory; the eyes were made with inlaid ivory, the irises with black stone and the eyelashes with bronze. The oxydisation of the eyelashes has produced the extant stains on the cheeks which have flowed down from the eyes as if they were tears. Info The Acropolis Museum
