Day of Philhellenism and International Solidarity, April 19

ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ Since 2008, the Hellenic Parliament has established April 19th as the Day of Philhellenism and International Solidarity, in memory of the death of Lord Byron, who breathed his last on April 19th, 1824, in Missolonghi. For this reason, the historical anniversary exhibition "Facing Freedom! At the Hellenic Parliament, Two Centuries Later" was inaugurated precisely on April 19th, 2021. April 19th, the day of Lord Byron’s death, was officially established by Presidential Decree 130/2008 (Government Gazette 191/A/19.9.2008) as the Day of Philhellenism and International Solidarity. Lord Byron (George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron), having actively supported the Greeks' struggle for freedom, emerged as a symbol of Philhellenism and the quintessential Romantic hero.
