Reconstruction of the clothes of women from the Minoan era in Crete

- 04:45

ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ Reconstruction of the clothes of women from the Minoan era in Crete (reconstructions made by Dr. Bernice Jones). The clothes of Minoan women were surprising with their style and variety of patterns. Greek women of later times wore clothes with completely different stylistic solutions. The exposed breasts were a characteristic feature of the dress of Minoan and Mycenaean women. They attached great importance to their attire, wear and used jewelry. They wore a wide and long skirt with a decorative belt tightening the waist and a tight-fitting bra with a metal frame revealing the breasts. They put on coats or capes on cooler days. Hair, intricately combed, was decorated with brown or gold ribbons, beads or headbands. Others wore appropriate headgear. They wore unusual hats. Some were wide, while others were tall, almost completely covering their hair, decorated with feathers or ribbons. It can be seen at the Hellenistic Museum in Melbourne, Australia. The reconstructio...

MOLON LAVE (ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ) - The phrase from yesterday to today

- 22:06

ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ The ancient Greek verb phrase "MOLON LAVE" was the answer of Leonidas, king of Ancient Sparta, to the Persian king when he demanded the surrender of the Lacedaemonians, shortly before the battle of Thermopylae. Molon labe (Ancient Greek: μολὼν λαβέ, romanized: molṑn labé), meaning 'come and take [them]', is a classical expression of defiance. It is among the Laconic phrases reported by Plutarch,[1] attributed to King Leonidas I in reply to the demand by Xerxes I that the Spartans surrender their weapons. The exchange between Leonidas and Xerxes occurs in writing, on the eve of the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC). Corpus paroemiographorum Graecorum, ed. E.L. a Leutsch et F.G ..., Τόμος 2 According to Plutarch Plutarch in Ethics - Apothegmata Laconica 225b-10 gives us the whole epic between Xerxes and Leonidas. Ἀποφθέγματα Λακωνικά 225b-10 ]Ξέρξου δὲ γράψαντος αὐτῷ «Ἔξεστί σοι μὴ θεομα- χοῦντι, μετ´ ἐμοῦ δὲ τασσομένῳ τῆς Ἑλλάδος μοναρ- χεῖν» ἀντέγραψεν «Εἰ τὰ κα...

The Polychromy of Ancient Greek Sculptures

- 00:23

A painted replica of an archer (originally made around 490 BC) at the Parthenon, as envisioned by researchers Vinzenz Brinkmann and Ulrike Koch-Brinkmann. Courtesy Stiftung Archaologie, Munich. Once a generation, it seems, society is startled to learn that antiquity’s marble sculptures buzzed with color in their heyday, rather than the numinous white of their base material. Landmark shows such as “Gods in Color,” which toured from 2003 to 2015, and “Chroma: Ancient Sculpture in Color” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2022 have embodied this era’s reckonings, offering reminders that ancient Greeks didn’t find bright colors garish. In fact, they were used extensively for their beauty, and to help delineate figures from far away The conviction that Greek marbles were white did stem from observation. Most examples unearthed were bereft of color by the time modern academics laid eyes on them. The pigments on these sculptures faded following centuries underground, exposure to the element...
